In a Sept. 3 announcement, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) unveiled a $2 billion quality incentive program for nursing homes as part of the $5 billion funding tranche of CARES Act funding it previewed last month for COVID-19 relief.

Each month, starting in September through December, $500 million will be distributed to nursing homes according to performance on COVID-19 case rates and risk-adjusted COVID-19 death rates, according to an update by the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL).

Performance will be determined from National Healthcare Safety Network data submissions and audits relative to county per-capita rates. No further details have been released at this time, the association said.

The HHS press release may be found here. AHCA/NCAL is holding a webinar today (Sept. 8) at 1:00 p.m. ET on the subject.
