Latest RAI Manual Now Available Online

A new version of the Long Term Care Facility Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) User’s Manual is now available online. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the manual late May 20 on its website, titled “MDS 3.0 RAI Manual v1.17_October 2019.”
The early release was made in response to stakeholder feedback, according to CMS. The 1,299 page manual contains a number of updates related to the Patient-Driven Payment Model.
The RAI helps skilled nursing center staff in gathering definitive information on a resident’s strengths and needs, which must be addressed in an individualized care plan. It also assists staff with evaluating goal achievement and revising care plans accordingly by enabling the nursing center to track changes in the resident’s status.
The purpose of the RAI manual is to offer guidance about how to use the RAI correctly and effectively to help provide care.
A final posting of the manual will be made before Oct. 1, 2019, and it may contain additional updates, says CMS.
Questions regarding information presented in the manual should be directed to the appropriate state RAI coordinator. Providers can monitor updates at https://www.cms.gov/Medicare/Quality-Initiatives-Patient-Assessment-Instruments/NursingHomeQualityInits/MDS30RAIManual.html.
