Merger Proof That ‘Culture Change Has Arrived’

The Eden Alternative and Wellspring made it official Thursday, merging their operations in what both sides hope will set the standard for forward-thinking care in the country.

Both nonprofit companies pride themselves on their progressive approach to long term care. Eden Alternative has spent decades refining what it calls a patient-centered care model; more than 200 nursing homes in the United States are Eden Alternative affiliates.

Wellspring says that it is clinically focused on improving quality. Nursing homes that have implemented Wellspring’s model generally use fewer restraints, medicate their residents less frequently, and are cited for fewer deficiencies.

Thursday’s announcement was expected. The merger is proof that “the time for culture change has arrived,” Eden founder Bill Thomas, MD, said in an interview with Provider last month.
