Multipurpose Moisture Barrier Protects, Soothes, Promotes Healing

Calmoseptine Ointment, developed 70 years ago by a pharmacist, has been proven to be an excellent multipurpose moisture barrier that helps heal many skin conditions. The ointment protects and heals skin irritations from incontinence of urine or feces, feeding tube site leakage, minor burns and scrapes, fistuals, wound drainage, diaper rash, and moisture, such as perspiration.

Calmoseptine can be also used to treat hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and skin folds or other moist areas subject to fungal infections. The mild antiseptic ingredients may help prevent secondary bacterial and fungal infections of the skin. As a counterirritant, the ointment temporarily relieves discomfort and itching from rashes, eczema, insect bites, and contact dermatitis.

Collaboration Improves Patient Experience, Identify Incidents that Require Intervention

Semtech Corp., Camarillo, Calif., a global supplier of high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductors and advanced algorithms, has collaborated with Ontex, an international personal hygiene group, for an Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled diaper tag.

Ontex developed and owns the smart diaper concept and worked with Zenso Electronics to seamlessly integrate Semtech’s LoRa® devices and the LoRaWAN® standard to alert caregivers when the pad needs to be changed. The solution features a printed sensor, transmitter, and a mobile or web application, which can accurately determine the saturation level of the diaper. LoRaWAN connectivity offers a small form factor design and ultra-low energy consumption, ideal for this type of solution in a smart hospital or elder care facility.

“Health and safety should never be overlooked and this joint solution highlights how the IoT is valuable for improving the future of smart hospitals,” said Marc Pégulu, vice president of IoT product marketing and strategy for Semtech’s Wireless and Sensing Products Group.

Program Trains, Certifies CNAs Amid Health Care Staffing Shortage

The National Association of Health Care Assistants (NAHCA), the professional association for certified nursing assistants (CNAs), and ShiftMed, a workforce management platform in health care, have joined forces to launch the National Institute for CNA Excellence (NICE), an integrated training platform that includes a learning management system to recruit, train, certify, and retain CNAs.

With CNA workforce shortages at record levels, and the need for long term care among older adults on the rise, accessibility to quality education and training are national imperatives. NICE is designed to address this crisis by providing both CNAs and skilled nursing providers with recruitment, certification, job placement, continuing education, and ongoing career support all in one place.

Through NICE, CNAs will have access to highly qualified instructors, including post-acute and long term care physicians, aging services policy leaders, and luminaries on topics that include Alzheimer’s disease, person-centered care, infection prevention and control, palliative care, survey and certification, and relevant federal regulations.

ShiftMed will tap its database of health care professionals to provide a purpose-driven career pathway for uncertified personal care aides through NICE. Once their online education has completed, they will download the ShiftMed mobile app and be matched with nearby health care employers.
