​As nursing homes continue to face historic job losses, to maintain quality and provide a safe environment for residents, providers use more temporary or agency nurses to serve as certified nurse aides (CNA), licensed practical nurses (LPN), and registered nurses (RN). Pre-pandemic in Q4 2019, agency staff were providing 3 percent of the total nursing staff in nursing homes across the country. Three years later in Q4 2022, agency staff were providing 11 percent of the total nursing staff. As shown below, every state and region in the nation has seen a similar increase in agency nurse utilization.
