The panelists offered the following tips for implementing voice-assisted technology in long term care facilities:

  • Choose two buildings that need to improve the accuracy of their minimum data set (MDS) documentation or look at the case mix indexes to see which buildings have the most room for improvement.
  • Include residents and families in the rollout process.
  • Bring all team members together to educate them and gain their support.
  • Have all team members, including nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse assistants, and MDS nurses, use the system.
  • Educate regulatory agencies about the switch to voice-assisted technology early in the process.
  • Involve all buildings in every meeting, even those that are not yet using the new system.
  • Involve nurse assistants in developing the care plans.
