Honoring Therapy Graduates with a Progress Parade
Completing a therapy program is an occasion worth celebrating.

Every day in long term care centers, especially skilled nursing facilities, progress happens through small but important steps in recovery and independence. The Progress Parade was created by the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) in 2025 to shine a light on these achievements by celebrating residents and patients who complete their therapy goals and the teams who support them. The purpose is to recognize each person’s accomplishments so that no progress is overlooked.
For patients, families, and care teams alike, these moments represent far more than the conclusion of a therapy program. They reflect perseverance, collaboration, and the belief that improvement—at any level—is worth celebrating. The Progress Parade reinforces an essential truth in post-acute and long term care: progress looks different for every individual, and every achievement deserves recognition.
Celebrating Therapy Milestones
Finishing a therapy program often takes weeks or months of hard work for residents and patients. Physical, occupational, and speech therapy all require ongoing effort, patience, and trust between residents and their care teams. Whether someone’s goal is to walk unassisted, move safely, regain strength after being sick or injured, or improve communication and swallowing, graduating from therapy is a major step in the care journey.
The Progress Parade gives skilled nursing facilities a positive and organized way to celebrate these achievements. By holding ceremonies, putting up signs, or giving certificates, facilities turn therapy graduations into moments of pride. These celebrations honor patients’ hard work and remind everyone of the purpose behind the daily efforts of therapy and nursing staff.
Facilities Bringing Progress to Life
Skilled nursing facilities across the country have joined the social media movement, each coming up with creative and meaningful ways to celebrate therapy graduates and involve patients, families, and staff. Facilities make sure their celebrations match their communities, so every resident’s achievement feels authentic. The Progress Parade succeeds thanks to the enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication of the skilled nursing facilities that take part.
In San Antonio, Tex., The Enclave found its own way to recognize therapy milestones, demonstrating how celebrations can be tailored to fit each community while keeping residents at the center. As patients leave the facility, they’re celebrated with a red carpet lined by staff members who congratulate them on their achievement.

Why Recognition Matters
Celebrating therapy graduation is more than just a one-time event. Recognition is important for emotional well-being, motivation, and confidence, especially for older adults recovering from illness, injury, or loss of ability. Noticing progress helps residents see how far they have come and encourages them to stay involved in their care.
For care teams, these celebrations create chances to connect and feel appreciated. Therapy and nursing staff see the real results of their work, and families get a better sense of their loved one’s progress.
The Progress Parade also helps inform and change how people think about skilled nursing and nursing home care. Many members of the public and policymakers often do not know that these facilities predominantly serve short-term patients who receive care for an average of twenty-five days, and half are discharged after their stay. By focusing on recovery, progress, and achievement, it shows that skilled nursing facilities are helping older adults and individuals with disabilities live life to the fullest and even return home.

To show the spirit and impact of these celebrations, AHCA/NCAL created a video called “Celebrating Progress” that highlights therapy graduations and the happiness shared by residents and care teams.
Moving Forward
The Progress Parade’s success shows how important it is to take time to celebrate our profession. By recognizing therapy patients, skilled nursing facilities support hope, dignity, and the idea that every step forward matters, big or small.
Help us grow the Progress Parade by sharing your facility’s stories, starting new celebrations, and inspiring a culture where every step forward is noticed. Post your parades on social media and use #ProgressParade.
